Nourishing Homemade Chocolate

What is it about nourishing homemade chocolate that sends me over the edge? Or maybe I
chocolate-203276_640should just say chocolate for that matter. This is one indulgence that
I have that has been with me for the longest. Chocolate has been a part of my sweet tooth repertoire since I was small. There was even a time when I finally ate enough of this recipe that I was able to not eat some for a while. Shhh…don’t tell anybody that though.

So what is in this most delightful recipe? Three simple ingredients then modify to your hearts content. Literally…HA!

Nourishing Homemade Chocolate Recipe

½ cup Coconut Oil

½ cup Cocoa

¼ cup Honey (Local, unrefined is best. Raw is another option.)

Stir and enjoy!

Variations

I absolutely love to substitute palm shortening from Healthy Traditions. When I use this, I may sub all of the coconut oil or ½ coconut oil and ½ palm shortening. It’s a wonderful texture and a change to the types of fats I’m taking in.

I’ve also been known to add in a dash of cinnamon, cayenne pepper, cacao nibs, chopped nuts, etc.  I also have a really nice black lava salt that is simply A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

What is your favorite addition to chocolate?

How to keep up with the kids

I often hear parents, mom’s specifically, talk about how they are having a hard time keeping up with theirchild-2029513_640 kids. They are tired, fatigued and are plain just stressed out after working all day and taking care of everyone. So what is it that changes when we have kids? Why is mom’s body breaking down?

BO. Body Odor. Pits. Smelly Pits. Oh My!!

Why? Oh why do my pits stink?skunk-1239764_640

What is BO? Where does body odor come from? Why do we have to deal with our pits? Much less smelly pits! What is it about these things that makes us run or want to hide or shut that off faster than a leaky faucet?  The good news, the more you know the more you can do something about this. So,  let’s do a little rundown on body mechanics and the stuff we slather on our smelly areas once or sometimes twice a day. (If it’s more than that…seriously, make an appointment already.)

A simple google search reveals that most people are wondering why do your armpits sweat, burn, smell, sweat so much, smell bad etc.  Let’s start with “why do your armpits sweat.” Simply, they sweat because of the glands in your armpits and groin and on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. When the sweat comes in contact with bacteria on the skin, it can produce an odor, which may be stronger in some people than others.”

Okay…Keep up with me.

The glands that are located in your armpits are part of your lymphatic system. The lymphatic system assists the body in fighting infections and transportation of white blood cells, removing toxins, and transporting fats from the digestive system. The sweat glands that are located in the skin (all over the body) assist in regulating our temperature.

Now that you have a little understanding of what is happening in your pits, I’ll share my stinky pit story with you.

I don’t recall at what point it was growing up but I started to notice that I had smelly pits. Things definitely escalated in high school when I started playing more sports. Physical activity and of course, you are going to sweat. But the stink, oh my! Where did that smell come from? It was never relayed to me in such a way that I was able to put together that the reason my pits stank was because I was “dirty.” I say “dirty” in the sense that the micro biome of my body was out of balance. I’ve learned that as I continue to eat healthy that my body tends to not stink. I’m just a bit envious of those people who comment that they never wear anything. I mean really?!?!?! But, it is possible! I’ve come close a few times but I haven’t hit that level quite yet and if my diet isn’t in line or I’m extra stressed or my body is out of balance, the smell returns.

Along the way, I’ve learned quite a few things about deodorant, health and the ingredients that they put into our most beloved brands.

The first thing to doshells-1984293_640

The first ingredient to avoid is Aluminum. Aluminum is a toxic metal that builds up the body and leads to brain damage, nerve damage and cancer. Aluminum is found in your most common/popular brands.

So what now? There are so many options available. The trick is finding what works for you. I’ve had awesome luck making my own. I like the coconut oil variety. Three ingredients and super simple to whip-up.

The first deodorant I used was Mountain Fresh from Whole Foods. As I learned more and more about lake-865155_640ingredients, I decided I wanted something even cleaner. I’ve seen some people use the rock crystals with great luck and there is a store here in Maplewood, Maven, that makes some wonderfully scented options. A client introduced me to Herbalix. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying it out yet but I’m excited to hear about her experience with it.

What have you done to try to control your stinky pits? Bonus points if it improves health!

Dear Dr Ulan,

I wanted to write you and let you know how amazing it is that I stumbled across your work. I moved to St Louis because I was looking for more job opportunities as a pharmacist. I wasn’t happy in my current position so I put my house on the market and moved into an apartment in Creve Coeur.  At the time I didn’t realize it was the medical model of sick-care that I was really having a problem with.

Ever since college I have been an avid chiropractic patient. When the time came for me to find a practitioner in St Louis I did a search and found Metro Chiropractic was the closest to my apartment. I called them up to set up my initial appointment and in closing they informed me that they had recently moved. I decided to go ahead and see if I liked the office even though they had moved and were a little further away now.

As I continued along my chiropractic plan, Dr. Rob informed me of another service he offered in nutrition. I wasn’t really looking for anything like that so didn’t get an initial consult. When I got to the point I wasn’t improving for a couple months Dr. Rob suggested I get an initial consultation again. This time I decided to give it a try; I figured I didn’t have anything to lose.

At the Report of Findings visit I was informed that my body was functioning as that of a 70 year old. What? Excuse me?  How can that be? At that moment I thought about my parents and their current health statues and knew I didn’t want to end up sick so I started a program. It was time for me to move into the health-care model.

During one particular visit (about 2 months into treatment) I suddenly had this overwhelming realization that this method was truly helping people find health and get healthy.  I felt this sense of relief wash over me that I had found something to truly help people and this overwhelming urge to learn more about this work. I was able to attend the Basic workshop here in St. Louis that February, only a short time after this light bulb moment. (It really was like that-a switch went on in my head that couldn’t be turned off.)

After the first workshop, I knew there was more I needed to learn so I immediately signed up for the next two courses, purchased the basic testing & supplement kits. The Patient Management Workshop and Intermediate workshop.  These workshops required travel to Clearwater, Florida. Florida-no problem!  While I was in Florida, your company opened my eyes to a whole nother world that had not presented itself to me. I am forever thankful for the care and attention that was shown to me as a practitioner and as a human being. Your staff helped lift me from the darkness and into the bright open world. Thank you!

I am simply amazed that there is a system that allows the practitioner to “listen and read” the body to find out the underlying issues keeping them sick and holding them back from optimum health. And then the body can tell us EXACTLY what it needs to get better. To realize that I have found Nutrition Response Testing, a way to help people achieve a happier, healthier way of life, is mind-blowing. I now know there are answers to parents’ woes when it comes to dealing with a “labeled” child. Or that we can help the determined clean-up and rebuild their bodies to unrealized health. We don’t have to be part of the sick and dying, we can be healthy once more. To this knowledge I owe everything.

Forever and always,

Dr. Sarah Wilmsmeyer, PharmD
